Install blocked by Norton Anti-Virus

This article will explain how to install the Method Sync Engine on a computer running Norton Anti-Virus.

The steps listed here are taken directly from Norton's website and provided here for your convenience!

Some users may experience an issue where their Norton Anti-Virus will prevent the install of the Method Sync Engine due to a security risk. This is likely a result of the Norton Auto-Protect feature blocking the setup.exe file from downloading and installing the necessary files.

In order to install the sync engine in this environment, you’ll need to temporarily disable Norton Auto-Protect. This can be done following the steps below:

  1. In the Norton AntiVirus main window, click Settings.
  2. In the Settings window, in the left pane, click Real Time Protection.
  3. In the Auto-Protect row, move the On/Off switch to the right to the Off position.
  4. In the Settings window, click Apply.
  5. From the dialog box that appears, in the Select the duration list, select how long you want to turn off Auto-Protect, and then click OK.
  6. Install the Method Sync Engine. See Get Started QuickBooks Desktop for more information.

Allow Sync Engine In Norton Firewall

Depending on the Norton product, some users may experience sync engine connection issues due to the Norton Firewall settings. We recommend that you allow the Method Integration Engine for Use with QuickBooks in Program Control. Program Control is part of the Norton Firewall protection that controls how applications communicate over the network. The default setting is likely Auto, and the sync engine can potentially be blocked from connecting to the Method servers. If you are experiencing connection and sync issues, try following these steps to always allow these connections:

  1. Start your Norton product.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Under Detailed Settings, click Firewall.
  4. On the Program Rules tab, in the Program column, scroll through the list until you find Method Integration Engine for use with QuickBooks.
  5. Change the Access to Allow.
  6. Click Apply, and then click Close.
Depending on your version of Norton software, these steps may vary. Refer to your Norton documentation if the steps do not match your version of the application.
